DGBR reviews progress of work on Atal Tunnel

Director General of Border Roads (DGBR) Lt Gen Harpal Singh reviewed the progress of the Atal Tunnel, Rohtang, today. This is his second visit within a month.

Lt Gen Harpal Singh is closely monitoring the tunnel work that is nearing completion due to its strategic importance through daily briefings and interactions with the stakeholders.

“The DGBR interacted with the officers at the highest levels to get permission for using the workforce and material at the construction site during the pandemic,” said BRO sources.

The people of Lahaul would be able to use the tunnel this winter to travel between Manali and Lahaul. The tunnel has now been christened the Atal Tunnel, Rohtang, and its final total length is 9.2 km.

Lt Gen Harpal Singh inspected the progress of civil, electrical and mechanical works, and gave his inputs on improving the aesthetics of the tunnel portals. He also spent considerable time at the Chandra Bridge on the north portal of the tunnel.

The sources said KP Purushothaman, Chief Engineer, Rohtang Tunnel, and Brig Baghi, Chief Engineer, Deepak Project, presented the details of the ongoing work and the completion plans related to the tunnel.

The DGBR expressed satisfaction over the progress of the work.

To be functional by winter
