Documenting bio-diversity in Shiwalik range must: Governor

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar today reviewed various developmental schemes and flagship projects being implemented in Una district. On the last day of his three-day visit, he directed all officers to create awareness among people and ensure that the benefits of schemes reach eligible beneficiaries.

The Governor said all of us owe something to the society and we must contribute in one or the other way. He showed keen interest in the proposed ethno-botanical garden project, to be executed in Androuli village of Bangana subdivision. Emphasising the importance of bio-diversity documentation in lower Shivalik hills, he said panchayat-level committees should be formed for better identification and documentation of biodiversity in the Shiwalik ranges.

Arlekar also enquired about the migratory birds visiting different wetlands situated in the district and directed Forest Department officers to facilitate bird photographers and bird watchers to promote tourism in the area. He also suggested organising an event for bird watchers annually, so as to boost local tourism.

The Agriculture Department must persuade farmers to adopt natural farming since the concept was commercially viable and also prevented the use of harmful chemicals, the Governor added.

Deputy Commissioner Raghav Sharma apprised the Governor regarding the proposed tourism project in Androuli village. A sum of Rs 7 crore would be spent to construct a rural sanitary mart, water sports complex and an ethno-botanical garden under the project. Una SP Arjit Sen Thakur, ADC Amit Kumar Sharma and officers of different departments were present in the meeting.

Later, the Governor visited Ashray, a rehabilitation centre for specially abled children in Dehlan village of Una. He interacted with the children and appreciated the organisation’s efforts for the cause. He also visited Aradhana Self Help Group in the same village. The group has physically challenged people as members, who collectively make incense cakes and cotton wicks to earn livelihood.
