Drunk attendant misbehaves with medicos, cops begin probe

The Chamba police have initiated a probe following an alleged incident of misbehaviour with two women medical interns and a junior resident doctor during their night duty at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College. The college administration filed a police complaint after the alleged harassment by a patient’s attendant in the medicine ward on the fourth floor.

The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday night when the interns and junior resident were attending to their duties. A patient’s relative allegedly began making inappropriate and unwelcome remarks. When the doctors urged him to stop, the man did not heed and became more abusive and disrespectful.

Other medical staff and security personnel intervened and managed to remove the individual from the ward. The college management immediately informed the police, urging strict action to prevent such occurrences in the future.

Dr Manik Sehgal, spokesperson for the medical college, condemned the incident and emphasised the need for protecting the dignity and safety of healthcare professionals. He called for stringent measures to prevent harassment, particularly during night shifts.

Superintendent of Police Abhishek Yadav stated that the police are thoroughly investigating the matter and have already questioned the individual involved. Further action will be taken based on the investigation’s findings.

In response to the incident, the college administration has requested increased police patrolling during night hours to ensure a secure working environment for medical staff. The case has highlighted growing concerns over the safety and well-being of healthcare professionals, especially those working late hours, in medical institutions.
