Eight residential quarters of employees in the National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) Colony, Surangani, in Chamba were gutted in a massive fire that broke out late on Saturday.

No loss of life has been reported as all occupants were evacuated in time. However, all their belongings were reduced to ashes.

The blaze intensified when three LPG cylinders exploded, spreading panic throughout Surangani and making rescue efforts difficult. Fire brigade from Surangani and Salooni arrived at the scene and worked tirelessly to control the blaze.

Affected families were provided temporary accommodation at the NHPC field hostel late at night.

The fire was brought under control by 4 am on Sunday. Salooni Subdivisional Magistrate Naveen Kumar Sharma, confirmed that there were no casualties in the incident. However, all belongings inside the quarters were gutted.

Meanwhile, the authorities have launched investigations to ascertain the cause of fire.
