The authorities have directed all contractors, hoteliers and property owners who have either rented out their properties to migrants or have employed them to get then registered at the nearest police station in the Kasauli subdivision.

The move assumes significance in view of the recent demonstrations by residents who claimed that a large number of outsiders was staying at places like Parwanoo, Dharampur, Kasauli, Garkhal, Sanwara and Jabli in the subdivision without registration.

With reports of skirmishes between locals and migrants also pouring in, the former feared that the “outsiders” could get away after committing crimes in case they were not registered with the police.

A large number of migrants from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal as well as Chhattisgarh was either working in shops, hotels or pursing jobs like whitewashing, plumbing, welding, construction workers, etc.

Parwanoo DSP Pranav Chauhan said the campaign to register migrants, which began a week ago, was drawing a good response as nearly 50 registrations were being done on a daily basis in all police stations of the subdivision. He said an awareness campaign had also been started by pasting notices at public place and through the media platforms to ensure that all migrants were registered.

The DSP said those failing to register themselves would face action. He said the migrants were required to submit their Aadhaar cards along with proof of their permanent address at the nearest police station for verification.

The Kasauli subdivision has about 150 hotels, besides homestay units as well as bed and breakfast units. There was a spurt in the construction activity for the last about two decades as new hotels and houses were coming up at every nook and cranny of the subdivision. A large number of migrants are seen working at these places.

The Deputy Commissioner was yet to enforce mandatory registration of the migrants despite reports of skirmishes being reported from places like Garkhal in the last few days. Solan DC Manmohan Sharma, when contacted, said they had made all preparations for registering the migrants and a nod was awaited from the state government.

Nearly 5,000 registered this year: Solan SP

Solan SP Gaurav Singh said more than 600 migrants had been registered across subdivisions of Solan since the campaign began about a week ago. Besides, nearly 5,000 migrants had been registered this year in the district and the figure would go up, he added.
