Nahan, March 2
The Transport Department has been taking strict measures to address the issue of vehicles flouting traffic rules in Paonta Sahib, a sensitive area in Sirmaur district that shares interstate borders with Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
A team of Regional Transport Officer (RTO) in Sirmaur has imposed fines worth over Rs 1 crore from April 2023 to January 2024 at the Govindghat RTO check post, which is situated on the interstate border of Himachal and Uttarakhand.
The department has been constantly acting against vehicles violating the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act, especially those without insurance, valid pollution certificate, permits and registration certificate (RC) violation. The department has been issuing challans to violators and imposing fines on them. The fines collected from the violators have been a testament to the Transport Department’s ongoing efforts to curb traffic rule violations and ensure road safety in Paonta Sahib.
According to Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) Sona Chauhan, who is posted at the Govindghat check post of Paonta Sahib, a total of 3,736 challans have been issued, resulting in a fine of over Rs 1 crore being collected. The fines were imposed on vehicles entering Himachal from other states.
Overloading seems to be most common violation for vehicles leaving Himachal, but the RTO check post at Govindghat is specifically for vehicles entering Himachal from other states. So overloaded vehicles leaving Himachal are not stopped and checked at this post, said Naresh Parashar, a resident.
