The Department of Education, Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), organised a programme to mark International Literacy Day. The event was attended by Prof Ajay Kumar Attri, Dr Chaman Lal (Chairperson, Department of Education), Dr Yudhveer, Dr Kanika Handa, Dr Rakesh Kumar and Med students.

Dr Chaman Lal noted that September 8 was chosen by UNESCO to highlight the universal right to education. He emphasised that the day serves as a reminder of the transformative power of literacy and the global commitment to education as a fundamental human right.

He added that the 2025 observance is themed “Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era”, with a co-theme in some regions: “Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace.”

Prof Attri underscored the need to integrate traditional literacy with digital skills. He stressed the importance of addressing digital illiteracy among marginalised communities.
