Farmers gain insights at 2-day workshop

A two-day workshop on the theme “Farmers’ problems and their solutions: Interaction of farmers with agriculture experts” was organised by the MS Swaminathan School of Agriculture, Shoolini University, under the Initiative for Social Empowerment and Sustainability of Rural Population in the Western Himalayan Region.

It focused on agricultural challenges faced by farmers in Solan where they were provided expert solutions through an extensive agriculture extension programme. A team of agricultural experts visited Shivathal village, where they interacted with progressive farmers and village pradhan Mrigank Sood besides 20 local farmers.

Prof DD Sharma led discussions on modern farming practices while Dr Perminder emphasised the significance of soil testing and micronutrient application for improved apple production. Dr Anshul educated farmers on training and pruning methods for apple trees, followed by Dr Bhagyashree’s insights on disease management. Dr Sonakshi guided farmers on apple processing techniques and Bhupendra conducted a practical demonstration on training and pruning techniques. Farmers expressed keen interest in adopting these scientific methods and requested more such interactive sessions.

The expert team visited Kundla and Shamti villages, where they engaged with progressive farmers — Kamal and Naman — who specialise in protected cultivation of carnations and capsicum. Dr DD Sharma highlighted the importance of farmer participation in extension programmes, while Dr Ravinder Nath provided guidance on effective insect management.

Dr Shweta Sharma shared sustainable crop management techniques and Dr Rajendra Kumar advised on optimal fertiliser use for improved soil health and productivity. Dr Deepika Sood addressed critical disease management concerns, offering valuable solutions to the agrarian community.

Farmers from both villages expressed their appreciation for the expert consultations and requested additional training sessions to further enhance their agricultural knowledge and practices. Prof Somesh Sharma, Associate Dean, MS Swaminathan School of Agriculture, said their initiative aims to strengthen the agricultural community in the region.
