In a proud moment for Himachal Pradesh and the remote Pangi valley, 14-year-old fencing prodigy Jiya Sharma is all set to represent India in the Asia Cup starting on Thursday in Haldwani.

Her selection comes on the back of a stellar performance at the Cadet (Under-17) National Fencing Championship held also in Haldwani from September 8 to 13 where she secured two medals, one silver and a bronze.

Jiya secured a bronze medal in the individual category and played a crucial role in winning a silver medal in the team event. Her stellar performance has now earned her the honour of representing India at the upcoming Asia Cup.

Her journey to national recognition is as inspiring as her talent. Before stepping into fencing, she had already made a mark as a four-time national champion in roller hockey. At the age of 12, she made the bold decision to switch sports and took up fencing. She began her training at Apex Fencing Club in Chandigarh, where her potential was quickly recognised. In her very first year of fencing, she proved her mettle by winning a team bronze medal at the National Championship held in Mehsana, Gujarat, a clear sign of greater achievements to come.

Since then, Jiya has consistently added to her medal tally, showcasing both technical skill and a fierce competitive spirit. Her accomplishments include two silver medals in the Khelo India Youth Games team events, two gold medals in the Chandigarh State Fencing Championship in the under-17 category, and two silver medals in the under-20 category at the same championship.
