A fire broke out at a confectionery shop godown in Chogan Bazar on Monday morning, reportedly due to an electric short circuit. Locals noticed smoke emanating from the godown before the shop had opened and immediately alerted the owner as well as the fire brigade.

A fire tender was rushed to the spot and the flames were brought under control in time, preventing major structural damage to the godown. While the initial cause is suspected to be a short circuit, officials said the exact reason would be confirmed after further investigation. Surinder Singh, the owner of the confectionery, said he had suffered losses estimated at around Rs 2 lakh in the mishap.
