In a major push towards planned urban development, the state government has initiated steps to establish a new township with modern amenities in Kangra district.

The move comes amid rapid urbanisation and rising population pressure in the hill state, particularly, in Dharamsala, Mcleodganj and its surrounding areas. The proposed township will be developed near the airport and is aimed at providing improved housing, infrastructure and employment opportunities.

Kangra Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa said the Himachal Pradesh Housing and Urban Development Authority (HIMUDA) had begun the process of identifying a suitable tract of land for this project.

According to initial estimates, approximately 2,000 kanals of land will be required for this new township. The district administration would assist HIMUDA in the land search exercise and acquisition process, the DC said.

As per the details available, the township would be developed under an integrated urban plan. The project would include modern residential and commercial buildings along with essential amenities such as well-structured road networks, water supply lines, drainage system and parks. The plan is also aligned with energy efficiency and sustainability goals, with provisions for renewable energy usage and green spaces to maintain ecological balance.

With Kangra already emerging as a prominent tourism hub due to its scenic landscape and proximity to Dharamsala, the new township is likely to attract investors, real estate developers and hospitality sector stakeholders. Improved connectivity through the airport, national highway links and rail access adds to the project’s strategic importance.
