GSI experts to visit Mandi’s Prashar area, assess landslide risks

A team from the Geological Survey of India (GSI) will visit the Prashar area in Mandi district on Wednesday to assess the impact of landslides and subsidence affecting local communities.

Additional District Magistrate Madan Kumar stated that the GSI team, comprising leading geologists and engineers, will conduct a thorough assessment of key areas prone to landslides at Prashar. The team arrived here today. The team members will engage with local residents to gather first-hand account of the incidents, which have increasingly threatened both infrastructure and livelihoods in the region.

The Prashar area, known for its picturesque landscapes and rich biodiversity, has faced escalating geological challenges attributed to heavy rainfall and deforestation in recent years.

“During their visit, the GSI experts will conduct detailed geological mapping and soil stability tests. The primary objective is to understand the underlying factors contributing to these natural disasters,” the ADM said

“The GSI team will analyse soil composition, slope stability and water drainage patterns to formulate effective strategies for mitigation,” he remarked.

Landslides in the region have resulted in significant property damage, road blockages and even casualties, prompting urgent action from state authorities.

The GSI team may recommend a series of measures like reforestation projects, improved drainage systems and community awareness programs about the risks associated with landslides. These initiatives will enhance the region’s resilience to geological hazards.

Officials from the district administration expressed optimism about the GSI’s involvement. “We welcome their expertise and look forward to their recommendations,” said ADM Madan Kumar. “Addressing landslide and subsidence issues is crucial for the safety and well-being of area residents.”

The team is expected to submit a report in the coming weeks, detailing their findings and proposed interventions to mitigate the risks posed by landslides in this vulnerable area.
