Speaking at a state-level event organised by Shri Guru Singh Sabha, Shimla, on the historic Ridge to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of the Guru, the Governor said sacrifice, penance, devotion and compassion formed the essence of Guru’s life and teachings.
He said, “Guru Tegh Bahadur’s life teaches us that religion is not merely about worship, but about protecting humanity. He gave his life to defend the rights and freedom of all, proving that sacrifices for truth and justice never go in vain.”
The Governor added that Guru’s message transcended all faiths and was meant for the entire humanity. The presence of people from different regions and communities at the event, he said, symbolised India’s unity in diversity. “Whenever society faces fear, intolerance, or division, Guru’s teachings light the path of courage, compassion and service,” he remarked.
Calling for people to imbibe Guru’s ideals, the Governor urged everyone to uphold tolerance, mutual respect and the spirit of selfless service in everyday life.
Earlier, the Governor was felicitated by Jasvinder Singh, president of Shri Guru Singh Sabha, Shimla.
Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur also attended the event and said Guru Tegh Bahadur, revered as “Hind Di Chadar,” spent several years in Himachal Pradesh. Thakur recalled that he established an ashram at Paonta Sahib, where he composed many sacred hymns. “The gurdwara at Paonta Sahib stands as a lasting testament to his courage, teachings and devotion,” he said, adding that the nation remains eternally indebted to his sacrifice.
