Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla visited the Atal Tunnel on the Manali-Leh highway and inspected the escape tunnels. Accompanied by Lady Governor Janaki Shukla, the Governor highlighted the tunnel’s significance in enhancing connectivity between Lahaul and Spiti and Kullu.

The Governor said that this nine-km tunnel was the highest single-tube highway tunnel in the world, located at over 10,000 feet above sea level. The tunnel had facilitated year-round accessibility, boosting tourism and also contributing to environmental preservation.

Sandeep Singh, Commanding Officer, BRO, provided detailed insights into the escape tunnels, which open every 400 metre. He said the tunnel had significantly reduced travel time and distance between Manali and Keylong, bypassing areas prone to roadblocks, avalanches and traffic jams.

Earlier, DC, Lahaul and Spiti, Rahul Kumar welcomed the Governor, who was accompanied by district administration officials and other dignitaries, at the north portal of the tunnel. The Governor later visited Sissu to enjoy the scenic beauty of the lake there.

He said, “While all of Himachal is beautiful, the charm of Lahaul is beyond words. We must focus on maintaining its purity and cleanliness.” The Governor also visited Vashisht village in Manali in the morning and offered prayers at the sacred hot springs and the Vashisht Rishi temple. The Governor returned to Manali via the Rohtang Pass.
