Harassed by husband, NRI woman rescued

Repatriation flights during the Covid pandemic proved to be a saviour for a 40-year-old woman from Hamirpur, who was subjected to mental and physical torture by her husband in New York.

The woman, an IT professional, was married to a resident of Bhagalpur (Bihar) six years ago and was presently staying in New York with her husband and one-and-a-half-year-old son. The couple was working in multi-national companies.

She got to know about the aggressive nature of her husband after marriage, who physically and mentally tortured her. She complained about it to her mother-in-law many a times, but to no avail.

While coming back to India with her family in a repatriation flight arranged for bringing back Indians, she sent an e-mail to her father, urging him to rescue her. She said she overheard a conversation between her husband and mother-in-law and feared going to Bhagalpur.

Her father immediately reported the matter to Hamirpur SP, who contacted the State Commission for Women, which coordinated with the National Commission for Women and NRI cell to rescue the woman.

Daisy Thakur, chairperson of the State Women Commission, said she was rescued on June 9, after the state commission coordinated with authorities and brought her back to Hamirpur. She has been institutionally quarantined.
