The HP High Court has stayed the decision of the state government to take control of the 180 MW Baira Siul Hydroelectric Power Project in Chamba.

Justice Ajay Mohan Goel directed the state government to maintain status quo qua the Baira Siul Hydro Power Project. The court directed the government that a communication issued by the state on March 26 and the decision of the Council of Ministers qua the project shall not be given effect till further orders.

While passing an interim order, the court sought response from the state and Central governments and listed the matter for further hearing on May 26.

The interim order was issued on a petition filed by the NHPC, which is at present operating the project.. The petition challenges the state government’s attempt to retrieve the Baira Siul project, which was started in 1980-81. It was originally to be handed back to the government after 40 years of operation. After the completion of 40 years, the government took steps to regain its control. However, the NHPC claimed permanent ownership of the project.
