Heavy rain wreaks havoc in Uttarala

Severe overnight rainfall has caused extensive damage in Uttarala and Lot villages under the Madhonagar gram panchayat of Baijnath subdivision. The torrential downpour led to the collapse of a crucial bridge connecting several villages in the Uttarala area, severely disrupting transportation and isolating many residents.

Several rivulets, swollen due to the rain, have come dangerously close to residential areas, posing a serious threat to homes in at least half a dozen villages. The fear of erosion and structural damage has forced residents to spend sleepless nights, with some reportedly sheltering in unsafe, rain-damaged houses.

In Lot village, three houses are under immediate threat due to landslides, which have made living conditions hazardous. Villagers continue to live in fear, as land movement and further rains could cause more destruction.

Gram panchayat pradhan Om Parkash told The Tribune that villagers were forced to remain out in the open under the relentless rain all night due to hill sliding and house damage. He appealed to the district administration for urgent relief and rescue efforts.

Baijnath SDM Sankalp Gautam confirmed that he had received reports and assured that affected families were being shifted to safer locations. He added that necessary relief is being provided in coordination with PWD and IPH departments.
