Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsHeavy snowfall has thrown normal life out of gear in Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul and Spiti district, severely disrupting transportation and power supply. The region woke up to a thick white blanket today, with more than 30 cm of snow recorded in several parts, while the district headquarters Keylong received around 15 cm.
The impact on transportation has been substantial, with the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) suspending services on 45 out of 48 bus routes in the district. Anshit Sharma, Regional Manager of HRTC Depot in Keylong, confirmed the suspension, citing safety concerns due to slippery and blocked roads.
The snowfall has also hit local agriculture hard. Farmers, already preparing for the winter, are now battling the consequences of the early snow. Apple orchards have suffered considerable damage as the weight of the snow has broken branches and damaged plants.
Connectivity across the region has taken a major hit. Spiti Valley has been cut off from both Lahaul and Manali sides due to heavy snow accumulation at the Kunzum Pass. The Manali-Leh highway remains blocked beyond Darcha for the second consecutive day, as heavy snow at Baralacha Pass continues to hinder movement. The Darcha-Shinkula road, connecting Himachal with Zanskar valley in Ladakh, is also closed.
The Koksar-Losar road stretch remains blocked due to snow on the Sumdo-Kaza-Gramphu highway. Only 4x4 vehicles are being permitted between Manali and Keylong via the Atal Tunnel, as a precautionary measure, due to the slippery condition of roads.
Higher altitudes in Mandi, Kullu, and Lahaul-Spiti received snowfall, while lower areas experienced heavy rain, leading to a sharp drop in temperature across the region.
Deputy Commissioner of Lahaul-Spiti, Kiran Bhadana, said the situation is under control and the administration is closely monitoring developments. “An advisory has been issued for both residents and tourists to avoid travelling towards snowbound areas. Public cooperation is vital to ensure safety,” she added.
Authorities have urged people to remain indoors and follow official instructions strictly, as efforts continue to clear roads and restore essential services in the affected areas. The district administration is on high alert and working to minimize disruption as weather conditions remain harsh.
