As a mark of respect to the economic expertise and able leadership of Manmohan Singh, the Himachal Government on Wednesday named the Himachal Pradesh Institute of Public Administration (HIPA) at Mashobra near here after the former PM.

“It was solely due to the wise economic policies pursued by Manmohan Singh as Finance Minister that India overcame the economic crisis, a global phenomenon at that point of time,” said CM Sukhvinder Sukhu.

He said it is most appropriate to name HIPA after the former PM, who laid the foundation of India becoming a leading world economy.

HIPA, located at Fairlawn, Mashobra, about 12 km from here, was set up on January 1, 1974. HIPA imparts training to officers not just from Himachal but also to some other organisations.

He said this is a befitting tribute to the former PM on a day when HIPA is celebrating its 50st foundation day. “The world admired his fiscal wisdom as Manmohan Singh in his capacity as Finance Minister led India on the path of prosperity when the world was grappling with a severe economic crisis and India’s gold was being mortgaged abroad,” he said.

Sukhu said, “Here at HIPA, all IAS and Himachal Administrative Service (HAS) officers get training to formulate policies for the welfare of the common people. As such we have decided to rename HIPA as Dr Manmohan Singh Institute of Public Administration,” he said.
