As per the directions of Deputy Commissioner, Shimla, Anupam Kashyap, the Animal Husbandry Department has sent invitations to Animal Husbandry Departments of these states. The sale and purchase of Chamurthi horses is a major attraction of this century-old fair. These horses have been part of the regional lifestyle for centuries. Referred to as the ‘Ship of the Cold Desert’, a Chamurthi horse can work in extremely low temperatures and function for long periods without food. Known for its strength and endurance, Chamurthi is one of India’s major horse breeds, famed for its ability to walk steadily over snow-covered mountainous terrain. The breed is believed to have originated on the Tibetan plateau and later brought to the remote regions of Lahaul and Spiti and Kinnaur by traders. At present, these horses are mainly found in the Pin valley of Spiti and the Bhawa valley of Kinnaur district.
