Identify causes of road accidents, take steps to curb them, Himachal SPs told

Himachal Pradesh Police has directed SPs of all the districts to identify the causes of road traffic accidents in their areas and to implement corrective measures to prevent them. This direction was issued by DGP Atul Verma during a monthly crime review meeting for Traffic Tourism and Railways which was held at the Police Headquarters in Shimla on Friday. The meeting focused on reviewing road traffic accidents (RTA), crime and devising strategic plans to mitigate road safety challenges through the effective use of digital devices, gadgets and technologies.

During the meeting, the DGP also directed all the SPs to hire cranes on a rental basis for towing vehicles. “Funds for crane hiring are to be allocated to the districts of Shimla, Kullu, Mandi and Kangra. Towing charges will be borne by the violators,” he said.

He said all the SPs were directed to ensure effective operation of the Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) with a dedicated team to issue challans based on captured violations. “Supervisory officers are required to regularly monitor ITMS operations and coordinate with executing agencies to resolve any issues,” he said.

The DGP also directed SPs and Supervisory Police Officers to monitor sensitive areas during Navratras, fairs and festivals, focusing on violations related to the transportation of passengers in goods vehicles. He told them to ensure strict enforcement and action against violators.

Verma said that the TTR team was required to review ITMS data and enforce strict compliance with traffic regulations across various districts, including weekly meetings and progress reports. “Electronic boards displaying challans for drunken driving and persons arrested are to be installed at key locations across the state. Eye camps for commercial vehicle drivers should be organised. SPs have been directed to ensure maximum suspension of driving licenses in cases of serious violations,” he said.

“Sensors and speed radars should be effectively utilised with specific targets for issuing challans and ITMS violations must be fully enforced,” he added. “All district SPs are required to submit progress reports on the directions issued before the next monthly meeting,” said DGP. — TNS
