IGMC advisory after scrub typhus death

Following the death of a woman from scrub typhus at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC), the hospital administration on Monday issued an advisory warning the public about the disease’s risks and urging prompt medical attention if symptoms occur.

Scrub typhus is transmitted through the bite of infected chiggers (larval mites) found in bushes, gardens and grasslands. According to the advisory, common symptoms include high fever — often reaching 104-105 degree C — along with muscle and joint pain and swelling of lymph nodes in the neck, armpits and groin.

To reduce the risk of infection, people are urged to wear full-sleeved clothing, long pants and closed shoes when visiting fields, gardens or forests and to keep their surroundings free of weeds.

The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising five eminent persons as trustees.
