The IGMC had started kidney transplant just before the outbreak of Covid-19 last year.

“The first 10 transplants will be done under the supervision of AIIMS doctors. It will help our doctors to build confidence and skills. Thereafter, our doctors will do the procedure on their own,” said Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr Rahul Gupta.

Dr Gupta said that the availability of kidney transplant services at the IGMC would benefit the people of the state. “A kidney transplant outside the state costs around Rs 15 lakh. Here it’s being done for Rs 3 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh. Besides, it is covered under the state government’s Himcare insurance scheme,” he added.

Secretary, Health, Amitabh Avasthy also visited the IGMC to meet the doctors, who performed the transplant. — TNS
