The Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi, Centre for Indian Knowledge System and Mental Health Application (IKSHMA) is launching first-of-its-kind MS (by research) and PhD programmes in music and musopathy. Online applications for the courses are open till July 15, 2024. An IIT-Mandi spokesperson said, “This initiative underscores our commitment to promoting interdisciplinary learning and contributing to the highly regarded field of Indian music and the burgeoning field of musopathy. The programme is open to both full-time and part-time candidates and can be pursued in-person, online, or in a hybrid format by all qualifying candidates, regardless of geographical location.”

Speaking about the new programme, IIT-Mandi Director Laxmidhar Behera said, “IIT-Mandi is committed to developing science and technology relevant to the Indian knowledge system. The MS and PhD programmes in music and musopathy represent another significant step in this endeavour. This programme will not only explore the science of Indian music, but also its therapeutic value for the holistic wellbeing of mind, body and consciousness.”

“The MS and PhD programmes in music and musopathy are research-based, aimed at producing highly skilled professionals and researchers who can meaningfully contribute to the development and understanding of music and its beneficial impacts on individuals and society, including the wellness-centric field of musopathy,” he added. Sowmya Acharya, CEO of Acharyanet.com, expressed her enthusiasm about collaborating with IIT-Mandi for the programme and said, “It is an honour to collaborate with a premier institution like IIT-Mandi for this unique initiative that bridges the worlds of arts, science, wellness and health.”

“Graduates of this programme will find substantial opportunities not only in the classical, popular and film music industries, including as specialists in music recording and production, but also in research institutions, academia and the healthcare and wellness sectors. The seamless integration of technology, music and therapy equips graduates with comprehensive skills needed for innovative problem-solving and leadership roles across various disciplines,” Sowmya added.
