Kangra admn sets up surveillance checkposts at key trekking routes

Amid rising concerns over trekkers going missing in the Dhauladhar ranges, the District Administration of Kangra has launched a comprehensive safety initiative aimed at preventing future mishaps. With many adventurers previously losing their way due to the absence of a proper tracking system, the administration has now set up surveillance checkposts at the starting points of the 10 most popular trekking routes in the district.

The District Magistrate has invoked the Disaster Management Act, making registration at these checkposts mandatory for all trekkers. Talking to The Tribune, Kangra DC Hemraj Bairwa said, “It was essential as we earnestly want to ensure the safety of people.” Failure to comply the guidelines will invite legal action under the Disaster Management Act.

Trained and dedicated volunteers have been stationed at the checkposts to assist trekkers, maintain real-time record and ensure that they are well-informed before embarking on their journey.

This step is more than just a regulation—it is essential for the safety of the trekkers. With each registered trekker logged and monitored, rescue efforts in case of emergency can be swift and focused. The move has been welcomed by local guides and tourism stakeholders in the entire district, who see it as a vital measure to preserve the reputation of the region as a safe adventure destination.

As footfall increases in the scenic yet challenging terrains of Kangra, the administration’s proactive approach is a timely reminder that while the mountains beckon, safety must always come first. With the initiative, trekking in Dharamsala and the adjoining areas is set to become not only more organised, but significantly safer as well.

The newly set up 10 checkposts enroute Dhauladhar ranges are at Salli, Nauhali, Gallu Tepal, Khadota, Kand-Kadiyana, Jiya, Thala, Nanahar, Uttarala power project and Raajgundha.
