The recognition celebrates Kangra’s exceptional community-led awareness and outreach campaigns that have transformed the way people perceive and respond to TB.
Under strong district leadership, Kangra has adopted a holistic, multi-sectoral approach — uniting the health, education and social welfare departments with local organisations to strengthen the End TB Mission. Yet, stigma remains one of the greatest hurdles. Many still hesitate to seek treatment due to the fear of discrimination though TB is curable and its treatment is free.
To counter this, Kangra’s health workers, educators and volunteers are breaking myths through open dialogue, school sessions and street theatre. This people-driven movement has made conversations about TB more open and compassionate. “No one should hide their illness or suffer in silence — TB is curable, and care is free for all,” says Dr Vivek Karol, Chief Medical Officer, Kangra.
The district has also doubled its Nikshay Shivirs for early screening and enrolled 16,387 Nikshay Mitras, the highest in Himachal Pradesh. These volunteers form the heart of Kangra’s mission, offering psychosocial care and community support. “Our 16,000 plus Nikshay Mitras are the heartbeat of Kangra’s TB elimination drive,” says Dr Rajesh Sood, District TB Officer. “Their compassion has turned awareness into action — and hope into healing,” he adds.
