Kangra’s shaktipeeths set for major makeover

The Himachal Pradesh Government has initiated the preparation of a comprehensive master plan to upgrade and beautify major shaktipeeths and government-notified temples across Kangra district. DC Hemraj Bairwa said all Sub-Divisional Magistrates have been directed to expedite preliminary processes to kick-start the project.

He revealed that experts from NIT-Hamirpur have already been roped in to design the master plan for the Jwalamukhi temple, one of the region’s most revered shrines. The effort, he said, is aimed at creating a spiritually enriching and well-organised environment befitting the millions of pilgrims who visit these temples annually. The development plan includes infrastructure improvements, enhanced visitor amenities and systematic interventions to strengthen religious tourism in the district.

Similar master plans will be prepared for the Chamunda, Brajeshwari and Damtal temples in collaboration with specialised agencies to ensure long-term upkeep and better facilities for devotees. Bairwa has also directed officials to begin Aarti at the Van Ganga in Brajeshwari Dham and ensure the maintenance of the Bhairav, Ashtabhuja and Tara Devi temples in Jwalamukhi.

A phased rollout of digital services, such as online langar booking and online darshan, is planned to modernise temple management while preserving traditional worship practices. During a review meeting, the DC stressed strict oversight of temple offerings, regular inspections of storage facilities and swift action against encroachments on key temple routes to ensure smooth pilgrim movement.

He also reviewed cow shelters run by temple trusts, calling for prompt resolution of audit paras and sustained cleanliness. The meeting was attended by ADM Shilpi Bekta, SDMs from multiple subdivisions, and officials from various temple trusts.
