In a determined effort to boost community-level action against drug abuse, Kullu Deputy Commissioner Torul S Raveesh has launched a new initiative that aims to recognise and reward the exceptional work of panchayats, urban local bodies and NGOs engaged in combating substance abuse in the district.

The announcement came on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which is observed globally on June 26. The initiative, formally launched under the aegis of the District Red Cross Society, Kullu, reflects the district administration’s commitment to supporting grassroots efforts to address the growing concern of drug addiction.

Under this new scheme, awards will be presented in two categories. The first includes panchayats and urban local bodies, while the second is dedicated to NGOs. For the first category, the top three performers will receive a citation along with cash prizes of Rs 2 lakh, Rs 1 lakh and Rs 50,000, respectively. A single award will be given to an NGO, comprising a citation and a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh.

DC Raveesh highlighted that the initiative is designed not only to recognise outstanding contributions but also to encourage sustained community engagement in the fight against drug abuse. “Through this scheme, we aim to acknowledge and encourage those who are actively contributing to building a drug-free society,” she said.

The awards will be given to institutions that have demonstrated real, measurable impact through awareness campaigns, de-addiction initiatives, rehabilitation efforts and other innovative strategies to reduce drug dependency. The administration hopes that such recognition will serve as both a reward and a motivation for continuing this vital work.

Panchayats, urban local bodies and NGOs currently involved in anti-drug efforts can submit their applications for the awards in the prescribed format, routed through their respective Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil).

Raveesh urged all eligible institutions to actively participate in this initiative and contribute to creating a healthier, more informed and drug-free Kullu. She expressed hope that the scheme would significantly boost local engagement and foster long-term societal change, setting a strong example for other regions to follow.
