Kullu landslide: Himachal govt issues advisory for tourists; MeT warning

Rescue operations have been intensified in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district after flash floods triggered by cloudbursts swept through several areas, leaving a trail of destruction and several people missing.

Officials reported that three individuals, including a 14-year-old child, are still unaccounted for in the Rehla Bihal area of Sainj. The victims were reportedly washed away while attempting to retrieve valuables from their homes as floodwaters surged through the region.

Deputy Commissioner Torul S Ravesh confirmed that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has joined the ongoing search and rescue operations. She urged tourists to avoid riverbeds and low-lying areas during the monsoon season, emphasising that while the rains are a seasonal attraction, safety must remain a priority.

Flashfloods have also been reported in Manali and Banjar, with significant damage reported in Sainj, Gadsa, and Hornagad, all within the Banjar Assembly Constituency.

Banjar MLA Surinder Shauri, who visited the flood-hit areas, said the main road in Hornagad is blocked, and essential services like electricity and water supply have been disrupted.

He has directed officials from the revenue department to begin relief efforts and assist the affected residents promptly.

The meteorological department has issued a warning of light to moderate flashflood risk over the watersheds and neighbourhoods of Shimla, Mandi, Kangra, Sirmaur and Chamba districts for the next 24 hours as the state is set to witness heavy to very heavy rain in isolated parts.
