Letter box-shaped post office to attract tourists in Spiti valley

A letter box-shaped post office building at Hikkim in Spiti valley will be a major attraction for tourists in the tribal district.

Inaugurating the building, Vandita Kaul, Chief Post Master General, Himachal Circle, said there was no such post office building across the country. “This building is a centre of attraction,” she said.

The world’s highest post office had been running in an old building in Hikkim since 1983. Since the building is in a dilapidated condition, the department has constructed the new one.

According to Vandita Kaul, tourists visiting Hikkim village send letters to their near and dear ones across the country and abroad. “The postal department has now become digital. During Covid, the department took pension to beneficiaries at their houses. The department is also delivering goods ordered online,” she said while praising the staff of Rampur Circle of Postal Department.

Kaza Additional Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Verma, who was also present, said Hikkim’s post office had been one of the favourite tourist places of Spiti. The village is situated 14,400 feet above sea level at Langcha panchayat in Lahaul and Spiti.
