The surge in water flow happened after the release of water from the Pandoh Dam last night.
Despite the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) authorities issuing an alert yesterday regarding the increased water discharge, the construction company continued operating heavy machinery on the banks of Beas river until late night. Ignoring the warning proved disastrous when strong currents suddenly engulfed one of the machines, pulling its operator into the river.
According to Project Director NHAI Mandi Varun Chari, the contractors of construction company were informed in advance about the water release warning issued by the Pandoh dam authorities. The operator Tanvir Alam, a native of Bihar, was trying to move the machinery at safe place from the area, when swift gush of Beas river washed away the victim.
Search operations were launched immediately, but even after overnight effort, the missing operator could not be found. Rescue teams continued combing the riverbanks today in the hope of locating him but he was still untraceable.
The incident took place near Bindravani, where the company is engaged in constructing a four-lane bridge. Heavy equipment had been stationed in the riverbed to excavate foundations for the bridge pillars. Authorities have expressed concern over the negligence despite clear warnings, raising questions about safety measures being followed during major infrastructure works along the river.
Mandi SP Sakshi Verma said a case has been registered in this incident and investigation was underway.
