The Shimla Summer Festival began on a vibrant and powerful note as 150 women came together to perform the grand Mahanati, a traditional Himachali folk dance. Set against the backdrop of the “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” campaign, the performance was more than just a cultural showcase — it was a celebration of strength, unity, and the rising spirit of womanhood.

The rhythmic swirl of colourful attire, the synchronised footwork and the soaring energy of the dancers transformed the opening ceremony into a visual symphony of empowerment. The event was graced by Additional Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Verma and Additional District Magistrate (Protocol) Jyoti Rana, who applauded the women’s enthusiastic participation.

ADC Verma highlighted the deeper purpose behind the performance. “The Mahanati is not just a dance, it’s a symbol of women’s rising power. Today, women are taking charge in every field — from grassroots to global platforms. Across the district, they’re creating self-employment, uplifting communities, and building livelihoods from their homes.”

Mamta Paul, District Programme Officer for Women and Child Development, added that the grand Nati performances will continue for the next five days, keeping the spirit of celebration and empowerment alive throughout the festival.

Adding to the festivity, the Himachal Pradesh Police Brass Band set the mood with soulful and patriotic tunes, leaving the audience in awe and amplifying the grandeur of the opening night.
