Expressing concern over the possibility of communal tension in the town, Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the state government as well as the district administration to make urgent efforts to maintain peace, harmony and law and order in the town.

A delegation of the Shimla District Committee of the party here today met Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap and Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi to discuss the issues.

CPM district secretary Sanjay Chauhan said some mischievous elements were attempting to incite communal tensions in the state’s capital, particularly in areas such as Malyana and Sanjauli.

He urged the district administration to intervene in the matter promptly and take strict action to ensure that communal harmony was maintained in town. He called upon citizens of Shimla to remember that the city was historically known for its communal harmony and that there had never been any division based on religion, caste, region or any other factor in the area.

“Disputes between two parties should be resolved in accordance with the law, and stringent actions should be taken against those found guilty,” he said.

Chauhan also condemned any attempts to give a “communal angle” to such disputes, regarding these as an attack on the country’s constitutional framework.

“Shimla must not become a laboratory for communalism,” he added.

Chauhan also assured the district administration that the party would stand shoulder to shoulder with the state government, district administration as well as the public to restore communal harmony and peace.
