Man arrested with 27g chitta, Rs 2.29 lakh
In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Chamba police have arrested a man with 27.94 gram chitta (heroin) and Rs 2.29 lakh in cash from Bhariyan village near Chamba town. Accused has been identified as Arvind Kumar, a resident of Bhariyan.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team from the Sultanpur police post was conducting routine patrolling along the Chamba–Mangla-Jot Road when they received information about illegal drug activities being conducted from a shop in Bhariyan. Based on this input, the team raided the suspected location and discovered the narcotics and cash during a thorough search of the shop.
The accused was arrested, and a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered at Sadar Police Station, Chamba, said Chamba SP Abhishek Yadav. Arvind Kumar is a repeat offender and has previously been involved in drug trafficking cases, with ongoing legal proceedings against him.
The arrested individual was produced before a local court on Tuesday, which granted a three-day police remand for further investigation.
The SP confirmed the arrest and emphasised the police department’s intensified efforts to eliminate drug trafficking in the district. “We have laid a wide net to catch drug peddlers. No one involved in drug trafficking will be spared,” he said. He also appealed to the public to report any suspicious activities related to drug trade in their areas.
