Mandi college’s mat masters tackle to the top at kabaddi championship

Institute also hits bulls-eye in rifle, pistol shooting events

The valedictory ceremony of the first-ever inter-collegiate shooting and kabaddi championship organised by Sardar Patel University (SPU) was held recently at Vallabh Government College, Mandi.

The three-day event, from September 25 to 27, brought together nearly 300 athletes from various colleges the state, celebrating sporting spirit and competitive excellence. SPU Dean (Student Welfare) and Director (Sports) Rajesh Sharma was the chief guest at the event.

Addressing the gathering, Sharma praised the immense talent found in the colleges of the state. He said the championship offered a significant platform for student-athletes to display their skills.

Sharma expressed satisfaction with the enthusiastic participation and discipline maintained throughout the event. The highlight of the championship was the performance of the host institution, Vallabh Government College, Mandi, which emerged as the overall champion in both the rifle and pistol shooting events (men’s and women’s). The college also claimed the first position in men’s kabaddi and secured the second spot in women’s kabaddi.

In the shooting events, the college bagged top honours in all categories, with Sarthak Lakhanpal being declared the best shooter (men’s) and Arpita Sharma winning best shooter (women’s).

In the men’s 10m rifle and pistol events, Vallabh Government College stood first, followed by Maharaja Lakshman Singh College, Sundernagar; and Government College, Darang (Narla), in the second and third positions, respectively. The women’s 10m rifle event saw Vallabh College securing a commanding win with 880 points, far ahead of other competitors.

In kabaddi, the men’s team from Vallabh Government College stood first, while Maharaja Lakshman Singh College, Sundernagar, claimed second place.

In the women’s category, the Sundernagar team took the top spot, while Vallabh College came in second.

Vallabh Government College, Mandi, Principal Sanjeev Kumar presented mementos to the chief guest and other dignitaries.

He emphasised the importance of sports in holistic student development.

Sports Coordinator Ravinder Kumar presented a detailed report on the championship’s proceedings.

Flying Officer Chaman, who served as the media coordinator and president of the men’s shooting team, announced that Vallabh Government College, Mandi, had won the overall championship trophy in the inaugural SPU inter-collegiate shooting championship.
