The Shimla Municipal Corporation (MC) is struggling to collect pending property tax and lease rent to the tune of over Rs 20 crore. Raising the matter in the MC monthly House meeting, the councillor from Kangnadhar alleged that the MC was not making serious efforts to recover the outstanding amount from defaulters.

“Many prominent individuals are among the defaulters, with some even owing up to Rs 15 lakh to the MC,” he alleged. In response, MC Joint Commissioner Bhuvan Sharma said the civic body had issued notices to all defaulters, including government agencies. “The MC will take strict action, including disconnecting electricity, water, and sewerage connections, if the amount is not paid,” he said.

Councillors raised concern over blocked drains and sewerage during the monsoon season. Mayor Surender Chauhan said junior engineers will inspect drains and sewerage system to identify and fix issues.
