Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsAs part of the Government of India’s Viksit Bharat initiative, the 1 HP Air Squadron NCC, Kullu, is set to undertake a challenging and socially driven cycling expedition-cum-motivational outreach programme, Sankalp, from November 23 to 30. The expedition will be flagged off by Kullu DC Torul S Raveesh at 9 am on November 23 from Dhalpur Ground. Traversing the scenic yet formidable route through Banjar, Jalori Pass, Narkanda and Theog, the initiative reflects the NCC’s spirit of adventure, discipline and national service.
Wing Commander Kunal Sharma, Commanding Officer of the squadron and leader of the expedition, said, “This expedition is not just a test of stamina and endurance, but also a mission to inspire and guide the youth of Himachal Pradesh. Through this journey, we aim to connect with students, raise awareness and strengthen community ties, especially with our revered ex-servicemen.”
Covering nearly 300 km of mountainous terrain, the route includes an arduous 7,000 ft climb to the 10,800 ft-high Jalori Pass — one of the region’s toughest stretches. The steep ascent, unpredictable weather and significant elevation gain will challenge even experienced cyclists, making Sankalp a true test of resilience.
However, the expedition’s purpose extends far beyond physical challenge. The NCC team plans to visit 40-50 educational institutions en route, focusing on youth empowerment. “We intend to raise awareness about the rising problem of drug abuse and motivate students to adopt healthier, disciplined lifestyles,” Wing Commander Sharma said. “We will also guide them on the range of career opportunities available after Class XII and graduation, with special emphasis on the Armed Forces.”
The programme will feature motivational talks, career counselling sessions and interactive discussions at various schools and colleges. To inspire aspirants further, toppers from IIT-Mandi and NIT-Hamirpur will join the expedition at select points to share their academic journeys and insights.
