The prolonged suspension of the Pathankot-Jogindernagar rail line has left locals desperate for its resumption. The ongoing four-lane highway construction by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has further delayed railway operations.

The toy train, currently running between Kangra and Baijnath stations, cannot proceed to Nurpur Road (Jassur) due to hazardous conditions caused by boulders dumped by the NHAI along the ridge dividing the highway and the railway line.

Residents fear that the debris above the rail track could lead to fatal accidents. “The highway authorities must urgently clear the rocks to prevent untoward incidents,” urged Pritam, a local. The railway has repeatedly requested the NHAI to remove the boulders, but no action has been taken.

In addition, a 150-metre stretch of the railway near Ranital was damaged by landslides during the rainy season, yet remains unrepaired after three months. Local residents rely heavily on trains due to inadequate bus services between Jwalamukhi Temple and Jasoor. Devotees visiting Jawalaji Temple also face significant inconvenience as they rely on Ranital Railway Station for access.

Despite mounting public pressure, including interventions by MP Rajiv Bhardwaj in Parliament, progress is slow. The restoration of the collapsed Chakki Bridge, critical for connecting Pathankot to Kangra, is not expected to be completed until March 2025. Meanwhile, railway authorities, particularly the DRM at Firozpur, have been criticized for their indifference and unresponsiveness.

Local voices continue to demand immediate action to restore train services on this vital route, highlighting the risks posed by debris and the urgent need for track repairs.
