Over 400 to take part in Snow Marathon Lahaul

The third edition of Snow Marathon Lahaul, India’s first snow marathon, is scheduled to take place on March 10. About 400 participants from all over the country and 10 international entries will participate in the marathon.

The marathon is being organised by Reach India in Sissu in the tribal district Lahaul and Spiti, near the north portal of Atal Tunnel in Rohtang. The event will also feature participation of about 25 runners from the Indian Navy. Runners from Army and Air Force will also participate.

Addressing a press conference here today, Reach India CEO and Event Execution Head Rajesh Chand said the marathon is open for all age groups. “The marathon will feature men and women in four categories — in 42-km full marathon, 21-km half-marathon, 10-km race and 5-km race,” he said.

“This year, the event is also open to juniors and students from local schools like Day Star and DPS are planning to send their students to this unique event and gain exposure,” he said.

Chand said a training camp for the marathon will start on March 4 and continue till March 9. The marathon will be flagged off on March 10. “The training camp will be led by running and high-altitude experts, dealing with the nuances of snow and ice-running in mountains. The camp will include facilities for fitness and appropriate diet, besides a host of other things,” he said.

“This year, we are facing more challenges as the bridge across the running circuit was washed away in the flood that occurred during the monsoon season. However, the bridge is being restored,” said the CEO.

He said the event has the vital support of Himachal Tourism and Lahaul and Spiti district administration. The marathon has also received recognition from the Fit India Movement.

“Medical emergencies, a critical aspect of such outdoor sporting events, will be addressed by the Fortis Hospital, Mohali, the medical partner of the event. The hospital will provide two advanced life-support ambulances and a team of doctors and paramedics,” he said.
