Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur today accused the government of inaction in illegal religious conversions despite there being a legislation to check this illegal practice.

In a statement issued here today, Thakur alleged that in the Paonta case, the police-administration was supporting the accused instead of the victim. “There is a suspicion of a big conspiracy in the whole case and the police is harassing the victim rather than taking action against the culprits,” he said.

He said whatever was happening in Paonta Sahib was unfortunate. “The way the police is committing atrocities against the victim’s family and supporting a particular community is completely wrong,” he said, adding that the actions of the police and administration were totally biased, which is unacceptable.

He alleged that the administration was harassing the victim’s family. “The job of the administration and police is to do justice and support the victim and not to fulfil the political ambitions of the government. We will not tolerate such incidents in Devbhoomi. Instead of harassing the victim’s family and their associates, the police should take action against the guilty,” he demanded.

Thakur said that the attitude of the police has been surprising from day one as they were acting in a partisan manner. “The police is taking this type of action to hide its failure and to please its political masters, which will not be tolerated,” he said.
