First phase of voting in district peaceful

The polling in the first phase of the elections to Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) in Lahaul and Spiti district was peaceful yesterday. It was held in 118 booths set up in the district to elect the public representatives of 29 gram panchayats.

Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer Neeraj Kumar said that the polling process in the district was peaceful. The voter turnout in the Lahaul region was 65.72 per cent, and in Spiti, it was 66.32 per cent.

“The counting of votes for the posts of panchayat pradhan, up-pradhan and ward member has started while the votes for the Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti posts will be counted on October 4. Ballot boxes are being kept in strongrooms amid tight security,” he added.

Neeraj said that voters exercised their right to franchise with full enthusiasm and women in large numbers also cast their votes. He added that all preparations had been made for the second phase of polling to be held on October 1.
