Prisons Department opens surveillance centre across Himachal

To curb human rights violations and strengthen prison security, the Department of Prisons and Correctional Services today inaugurated its Integrated Command Control Centre (I4C) at the District Jail, Kaithu, Shimla. Set up at a cost of Rs 6.94 crore, the project was initiated on the directions of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, with implementation by Delhi-based IT firm Technology Never Sleeps (TNS).

The I4C will serve as the central surveillance hub for all 14 prisons in the state. All installed CCTV cameras across these prisons will be connected to this control room, enabling 24/7 monitoring. Suspicious or emergency activities such as fights, escape attempts, or suicide risks will be instantly flagged to authorities. The facility will be jointly managed by prison staff and TNS employees.

Speaking at the inauguration, officials emphasized the state’s reputation for prioritizing inmate reform and rehabilitation. The new control center is seen as a milestone in enhancing prison safety and transparency while supporting the humane treatment of inmates.

The initiative marks a significant step in integrating modern technology into prison reforms, promoting both security and rehabilitation.
