Shimla, June 8

Three more audio recordings of conversations between former Director (Health Services) Dr Ajay Gupta and Prithvi Singh of Bioaide Corporation, indicating a dispute over the bribe amount, have been found in the PPE kits’ purchase scam. Forensic experts have examined at least six cellphones seized by the State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau.

As per these recordings, Dr Gupta wanted Rs 5 lakh as bribe but the agent was willing to pay Rs 3 lakh and wanted another purchase order. However, no such order was placed with the state government deciding that all Covid-related purchases were to be made through tenders.

Sources said Prithvi Singh had deliberately recorded the conversation to pressure Dr Gupta into placing more orders. Dr Gupta was arrested on May 20 and released on bail on May 30. Prithvi Singh, a close associate of former BJP state chief Dr Rajeev Bindal, was arrested on June 6. Both have been booked under Sections 7 and 8 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. Voice samples of both accused have been sent to the forensic lab at Junga. A report is awaited.

After the name of Prithvi Singh figured during the inquiry, Bindal resigned from the post of state BJP president and his resignation was accepted by BJP national president JP Nadda the same day.
