The Department of Prisons and Correctional Services is set to make products crafted by inmates in various state jails available on online platforms. Currently, inmates are engaged in producing a range of items, including furniture, bakery goods and handloom products such as jackets, shawls, caps, sweaters and carpets. These products are sold to help inmates earn a livelihood and develop their skills.

The Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, SR Ojha, said efforts are underway to make these products available on online retail platforms. Talks with various online retailers are in progress, and soon, these items will be accessible for purchase, which will further boost the inmates' income.

He said the main aim of the initiative is to involve inmates in productive and income-generating activities during their time in prison, thus aiding their rehabilitation. Engaging in such activities allows inmates to acquire new skills, which can improve their lives and offer earning opportunities both during and after their sentence, he added.

This initiative stems from the "Har Hath Ko Kaam" project, launched by the Department of Prisons and Correctional Services. Under this scheme, inmates are taught new skills and compensated for their work under the Minimum Wages Act for unskilled labour. The scheme aims to ensure the welfare of both convicted and under trial inmates across the state.

In October 2024, a three-day exhibition-cum-sale showcasing products made by inmates was held in Shimla, drawing large crowds. Similar exhibitions would be organised later this year.
