The district authorities of Kullu and Lahaul Spiti yesterday set up two rescue posts, one at Koksar and the other at Marhi, on the Manali-Leh highway for providing help to pedestrians crossing Rohtang Pass.

Due to closure of the Pass, the gateway to Lahaul, for vehicular traffic movement, the residents of Lahaul Spiti cross the pass on foot if they have to move between Kullu and Lahaul in emergency situation.

The snow-bound Pass was closed in the first week of December last year in the wake of heavy snowfall. The BRO has pressed into service its machinery and workforce from the Manali and Lahaul sides to restore Rohtang pass on Manali-Leh highway for the movement vehicles.

SDM Manali Ramang Gharsangi said, “At each rescue post, personnel of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Manali, have been deployed. They have the expertise to lead rescue operations in snowbound area at the time of need.” — TNS
