Government Senior Secondary (GSS) School, Raja Ka Talab, located in the Fatehpur subdivision of Kangra district, has been selected under the Prime Minister Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme — a Centrally sponsored initiative by the Government of India. It is the only school in Kangra and one of just 19 across Himachal Pradesh to receive this recognition in the 7th phase of selection, confirmed recently by the state Education Department.

This achievement reflects the successful implementation of government-sponsored education schemes and the unwavering commitment of the school’s faculty and administration towards student welfare. The local community, students and parents have welcomed this development with renewed hope for quality education and upgraded infrastructure.

Launched on September 7, 2022, the PM SHRI scheme aims to modernise schools, improve education quality and effectively implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. It focuses on upgrading existing infrastructure and creating model schools that act as benchmarks for others. The initiative is expected to directly benefit over 20 lakh students nationwide.

Speaking to The Tribune, Dr Inder Singh, Principal of GSS-Raja Ka Talab, shared that the school met all the eligibility criteria for inclusion in the PM SHRI scheme. “Our school building is safe and well-maintained. We have adequate enrolments in both elementary and secondary levels, separate toilets for boys and girls, potable drinking water, and proper handwashing facilities,” he said. He also highlighted the presence of a well-stocked library, ICT and robotics labs, and sports facilities, all contributing to the school’s excellent academic performance.

While many government schools are witnessing declining enrolments, GSS Raja Ka Talab stands out with a rising student strength of nearly 600. The school also hosts NCC, NSS, Scout & Guide, and Police Cadet units, along with active youth and eco clubs. It promotes holistic development by organizing year-round extracurricular activities and currently supports over 100 students through various government scholarships. The campus is Wi-Fi enabled, enhancing digital learning.
