Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur thanked the Union Government for acceding to the request of the state government to name the Rohtang Tunnel as ‘Atal Tunnel’ after the name of former Prime Minister late Atal Bihari Vajpayee as a mark of respect to the great leader.

Vajpayee had laid the foundation stone of this tunnel in 2003.

The Chief Minister said that the decision in this effect was taken by the Union Government today.

He said the tunnel would not only provide all-weather connectivity to the land-locked Lahaul-Spiti but also attract tourists to this beautiful district. The tunnel would be helpful from the strategic point of view serving the border region of Leh and Ladakh.
