SFI slams HP University over ‘anti-student policies’
The Students’ Federation of India (SFI), Himachal Pradesh University unit, has criticised the university’s recent Resource Mobilisation Committee decisions, describing them as exploitative and detrimental to students. SFI president Ankush Rana stated that the administration was targeting students financially under the pretext of resolving its financial crisis.
A memorandum was submitted to the Dean of Students, demanding the rollback of these decisions. Among the contested measures is a proposed 10% fee hike from the next academic session. Rana called it “a direct attack on students’ finances.”
Additionally, the university plans to outsource transport services, setting bus fares at 50% of Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) rates. Rana criticized this move, saying it would significantly increase students’ transportation costs.
He also highlighted the lack of regular staff recruitment since 2019, despite the administration collecting application fees twice for non-teaching posts without making appointments. The university’s reliance on outsourcing staff is now being expanded, which SFI strongly opposes.
Further, the committee has decided to impose an entry fee for attending classes, adding to students’ financial burdens. “These anti-student policies are pushing education further out of reach for many,” said Rana.
The SFI has warned the administration of mass protests if such policies continue. The student body remains firm in its demand for the withdrawal of these measures and urges the university to prioritize affordable education and fair practices.
