The Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) unit of Students’ Federation of India (SFI) has demanded the authorities to extend the deadline that has been set for admissions in various colleges affiliated to the university.

A delegation of SFI today met Dean of Studies (DS) Prof BK Shivram and submitted a memorandum regarding their demand.

Yogi, campus Vice-President, SFI, stated that admissions are currently being held in colleges affiliated to the university and the last date for applying for admission was June 19.

“Since the deadline has passed, colleges are no longer accepting applications and are processing admissions of those applicants who had already applied for admission before the deadline,” he said.

Yogi said that the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education declared the results of the Class XII exams on June 19 evening. “Many students who passed the exams became eligible for college admission, but due to the end of the deadline, they are now facing difficulties in securing admissions in colleges. Additionally, there are other students who, for various reasons, were unable to apply before the deadline,” he stated.

“Given the circumstances, the university authorities should extend the deadline so that all the eligible students can get admission in the colleges,” added Yogi.

SFI also demanded the university authorities to grant reservation to students belonging to Economically Weaker Section (EWS) by including them into the university’s admission roster system.

Criticising the university for its failure to provide reservation benefits to EWS students in Ph.D. admissions, SFI mentioned that although the 103rd Constitutional Amendment in 2019 mandated reservation for EWS students, HPU has still not implemented it.

Yogi further stated that many EWS students are now seeking admission through the High Court due to the university’s failure to include EWS reservations in the roster system.

SFI also warned to launch a mass movement by mobilising the students from across the state if these demands are not considered by the university authorities.
