Shahpur students create AI-based waste segregator

In a proud achievement for the Hindustan Institute of Engineering Technology (HIET), Shahpur, a team of engineering students has created an AI-powered smart bin that promises to transform waste management. Parul from EEE (3rd year) and CSE 3rd-year students Rana Kajal and Aditya Nanda collaborated with Shahpur-based entrepreneur and company founder Anupam Mahajan to develop BinPro, an intelligent waste-segregation system with an accuracy of up to 95 per cent.

The innovation was showcased at the Bengaluru Tech Summit-2025, drawing attention for its practical design and advanced technology. The six-section bin uses AI-based sensors to recognise whether an item is plastic, glass or organic waste. When a user places an item near the sensor, the appropriate compartment opens automatically, making disposal simple, efficient and contamination-free.

Mahajan said the product would soon be launched with patent protection. In its initial rollout, BinPro units — each with a 400-litre capacity and priced between Rs 40,000 and Rs 1.5 lakh — will be deployed at airports, railway stations and shopping malls to help address India’s mounting urban waste-management challenges.
